July really flew by, didn't it? I started things off on a good note by reconnecting with someone I haven't spoken to much since high school, and we had a really nice chat. The rest of the month was filled with lots of annoying phone calls and emails because I've got some Life Stuff I've needed to take care of, and by the looks of things I'll still be dealing with this next month, so that's a bummer. Beyond that, it was pretty much normal (though I feel like this update is longer than usual if only because I tried quite a few things).
I went to a Cubs game earlier this month and had a pretty great time! Well, apart from the crying and panicking. You see, I have a pretty intense fear of heights and I only realized right before the game that the tickets that were bought for me were right on the edge of the upper area. Yes, they were objectively very good seats and I feel like an ass complaining about something someone else paid for, but I had a bit of a Moment when I made it to my seat and needed quite a bit of time to calm down. I'm glad I went though, despite the clouds the weather was much more pleasant than what was forecast and the Cubs won. All in all it was a great day.
I'll be honest, one of the games I played the most of this month was Slay the Spire 2. For some reason I returned to it at the start of the month and I was pretty much playing it nonstop for about two weeks. I've pretty much exclusively been playing the Necrobinder and I've beaten the first 9 Ascensions. I imagine I'll stick with this until I finally clear Ascension 10, then I'll probably put it down until it hits 1.0 (or until I feel it calling to me again).
I truly don't know what inspired me (there was a sale? I guess?) but I started playing that Ubisoft Avatar game, Frontiers of Pandora and... it's fine? I don't have much to say about it, partially because I'm not that far into it and also just because it frankly isn't that interesting. I went into this expecting "Far Cry with Na'vi" and that's basically exactly what it is. Nothing about it is particularly innovative or breathtaking but it's alright, and if you know me you might know that I happen to kind-of-like pouring time into these somewhat same-y open-world games that Ubisoft puts out. I doubt I'll stick with it, but it's been a decent time-waster.
There's a new Splatoon out! Sort of! In preparation for that, I decided
to finally play the previous Splatoon as, despite the fact I spent a ton
of time on the multiplayer for it (and loved my time with it) I had just
never got around to playing the single-player or DLC for Splatoon 3 (until now). Unsurprisingly, it was very good! The main campaign took some cues from the Octo Expansion and the mission design was more interesting as a result, while the DLC, "Side Order", was a roguelite thing that I spent a few hours playing (and enjoying). I may go back to it at some point, but now I'm in the middle of Raiders and I'm liking it. Maybe I'll write a bit about Splatoon once I finish this, but only time will tell.
I played more of (and finished) Ace Combat 4 and I had a really good time with it. I mentioned last month that I wanted to play through these and that's still true as I intend to go through 5 (and 0) before I play through 7 and the soon-to-be-released 8. I don't have much to say here, though I may write up a thing on the series when all is said and done, but I've been having a good time. Flying planes and getting into dogfights is fun, who knew?
After quite a bit of time away, I'm playing another Doom game! This time, it's Doom 3 and that's a game that's, well, alright. Not bad, not great, just sort of generic. I understand why it has the reputation it has even if I think some of the hate, and praise, is maybe a bit overblown. It just doesn't seem all that interesting. Still, I intend to keep playing it and I plan on going through its expansion/DLC afterwards. Maybe that'll change my mind on this game, we'll see.
I played some more Final Fantasy VII. I'm still not particularly deep into it, but I'm really liking it. I understand why it's the classic that it is but beyond that I don't know that I have much to say about it at this point. I plan on writing an in-depth thing once I finish it (and I'll probably keep updating you all in these monthly posts depending on how long it takes) but, surprise: the game that everyone says is one of the best is, maybe, one of the best.
I returned to a series
I last wrote about almost four years ago: Half-Life. I, somewhat impulsively, picked up a used VR headset for a song because I, frankly, really want to play Half-Life: Alyx one of these days and I thought I'd replay the series because it's been, well, almost four years. I love these games and revisiting them should be a good time. I've opted to play a modded version of Half-Life 1 (because I feel like I know that game well enough that spicing things up seemed fun) and I'll probably write about it more once I finish my replay(s).
I finally played some Yakuza 5! I'm still in the early hours so I haven't gotten very far but, well, it's more than I played the last two months so it's progress. I'm interested in seeing how Kiryu got himself into this new status quo, and starting with him makes me wonder how his story will tie into the other (four?) characters' arcs. I intend to keep chipping away at this and, as always, will have more to say on it once I'm done.
