What I Got Up To This Month (May '26)

May was a complicated month for me. On one hand I'm still in kind of a weird place mentally and I've got some changes I need to make soon, but on the other hand I'm feeling a bit zen about that change now and it's like a massive weight has been lifted. I've been very... pessimistic about this upcoming June due to some Life Stuff I knew would be coming, but I've kind of got a handle on things right now and for the first time in a very long time I'm feeling kind of okay about my future. I don't want to get too dour in this intro paragraph but that's, uh, sort of a new thing for me.

I've been trying to get back into the hang of watching stuff so I made the (possibly foolish) decision to start a whole bunch of shows at once. My thought process is this: I want to be able to bounce between things the way I might if I were following shows week-to-week, so I'm basically just getting a few plates spinning that I'll be keeping up with for the foreseeable future, if you'll forgive my clumsy metaphor. For some reason, I've decided to watch a number of anime that have been calling to me for a while, including (the new) Ranma 1/2 and, because I remember liking it as a kid, the early-2000s Cyborg 009. For some reason, that show left an impact on young-me and I've been enjoying actually experiencing it as an adult, even if it is effectively a kids' show. I've also started the shows Revolutionary Girl Utena and Violet Evergarden because I've had these recommended to me and I wanted a variety of things to jump between. I've also also started the new Spider-Man Noir series, aptly titled Spider-Noir, because it's Spider-Man and I'm me.

I'm still playing Tomodachi Life and I'm checking the store(s) every day to see what they've got new in stock, but beyond that I've largely slowed my pace down a bit. I wrote a blog post about the game and why I love it so much (which you can read here) but suffice it to say I've been having a great time just watching my creations interact and say-the-things-I-told-them-to-say. It's been a delight.

I played through the rest of Pragmata this month and really dug it. You effectively need to be managing a third-person shooter and a rudimentary puzzle game at the same time and it tickled a part of my brain I didn't know I'd been missing. I don't know that I have too much to say about it (I thought about doing a full blog post on it but I finished it some time ago and I think that moment has passed) but I highly recommend it if you're interested in a fairly-linear third-person action romp. It's a good time with likeable characters.

I'm apparently about halfway through it, but I've been playing IOI's 007 First Light and I'm loving it. I've said as much on Bluesky, but I love James Bond stuff and since we won't be getting any movies anytime soon I was eager to see a fresh take on the series, especially since it was the HITMAN people doing it. This game, while having shades of HITMAN to it, honestly feels more like an evolution of the Uncharted formula and I've been having a blast because, well, Uncharted was great! More of that (with a James Bond coat of paint that feels true enough to the franchise) has been a great mix. I'm looking forward to playing more of it.

I decided to follow up my inFAMOUS replay with one of inFAMOUS 2, and I still really love these games. I think the first has a tighter narrative but remembering just how much things improved mechanically for the second game has been a treat. These games mean a lot to me and I've loved having an excuse to go back to them, even if it is just for something as self-indulgent as a blog post no one will read. That'll be coming soon, though, assuming I stick to my schedule.

They patched in a new mode to RESIDENT EVIL requiem. I don't have too much to say about it right now, but it seems fun. I'll presumably write up a more fleshed out thing later, once the game gets its inevitable DLC (and maybe some more game modes like this).

I'm not far into it, to be honest I've effectively only watched the opening cutscene (so I'd have something to talk about here), but I've finally started Yakuza 5. The new location should be interesting, and I believe this has a similar multi-protagonist gimmick to 4, but beyond that (and knowing who the other playable people are) I really don't know anything about this game. Here's hoping it's good!
