What I Got Up To This Month (August '25)

Well, that was August. I feel like not much has changed for me and it's kind of just been a month of spinning my wheels and doing more of the same. I still have some stuff I want, and need, to do, but things are going alright for me, I suppose. That could easily change soon, but for now I'm just taking things as they come.

I played through the "Braking Point" story mode of F1 2021 and if this seems like an odd thing for me to play, I don't blame you. I don't typically play sports games, and I've never been a huge fan of sim-racing, but after hearing about this game ona podcast I've been getting back into listening to I thought I'd give it a shot, and I'm glad I did. It's a surprisingly solid sports narrative with well-acted cutscenes and the actual game parts provided fun enough racing challenges to keep me occupied. I'll be playing F1 '23 and F1 '25 at some point soon because that's the real reason I was interested in this game: an ongoing narrative that continues between games. For now just know that this is worth checking out if you like F1 (and can find a copy, since it's been delisted).

I played a lot of Assassin's Creed Shadows this month and I'm not entirely sure why. I don't know why I feel so drawn to this game when my feelings are pretty mixed on it, but it's been a good timesink, I suppose. The recent Assassin's Creed games are fairly mindless so whenever I feel like making progress in something that doesn't require my full attention (like, say, a podcast or YouTube video) I'll load up this game and go around doing whatever. I doubt this game'll make it high on my top 10 list this year, if it makes the cut at all, but I've sure spent a lot of time in it, for whatever that's worth.

I made it through multiple Yakuza games this month! Well, one Yakuza game and one Yakuza-adjacent game. I started the month off by finishing Yakuza 4, and I really enjoyed that game. For some dumb reason I decided to both 100% and Platinum that game so it was a pretty involved affair that ultimately caused me to spend several months on that game, but it's a very strong entry in the series. I then played through Kurohyou, the Japan-exclusive PSP spinoff, and that game is excellent as well. There's a fan-made English patch that I played which, while imperfect, allowed me to get through it pretty easily. This game is absolutely worth seeking out if you've enjoyed the Yakuza games and want another story set in Kamurocho. And, since two games wasn't enough, I started Dead Souls. I'm about halfway into it and right now it sorta just seems... okay? As always, I'll have more to say on it once I'm done.
